Mangrove swamp along the costal waters of Cape Tribulation, north east Queensland,Australia. Mangrove trees (family Rhizophoraceae) are moderate sized trees, which grow on low, often submerged tropical coasts. The seed germinates while the fruit is still attached to the parent plant. When it falls,it is already a substantial young seedling with a head start on life. Characteristic of the mangrove are the arching aerial roots which develop from the branches & stem. They form dense, intertwined thickets along the coastline, trapping silt & sediment, thereby causing a gradual build up of land | |
