Stein lake. This lake (lower left),in the Susten Pass in the Swiss Alps, was formed by the retreat of the Stein glacier after the last ice age. Such proglacial lakes are potential natural hazards. Heavy rains have twice caused the lake to break its banks, flooding lower areas. This has occurred in 1956 and 1998. Since the 1950s the lake has been used as a retention basin by a hydroelectric power station | |
