Dead Sea. Combined optical and infrared Landsat image of the Dead Sea (centre),between Israel (left) and Jordan (right). North is at top. In the infrared range water appears black. Vegetation is green and barren, desert ground is brown. The River Jordan runs into the Dead Sea from the north. The Dead Sea is the lowest body of water on Earth,at 400 metres below sea level. Water in the Dead Sea evaporates rapidly in the desert climate, leaving the minerals dissolved in it behind. It is about six times as salty as the sea,and hence is devoid of life, although it supports a major minerals industry. Image taken in February 1975 | |
