Lake Baikal seen from space. This view was taken looking roughly north-east. The two ends of the 600km-long crescent-shaped lake are covered with ice, whilst the central basin is almost clear. This is thought to be due to the 'overturn' of warmer deep water with cold surface water. Lake Baikal is located on a rift zone in Siberia,CIS. The warmth from deep water hot vents creates a unique ecosystem in the lake. Baikal is the largest single reservoir of fresh water in the world, approximately 20% of the planet's supply. In parts, the lake reaches depths of over 2000 metres. This photograph was taken during Shuttle Mission STS-45 of 24 March to 2 April 1992 | |
