Lake Nasser and the Aswan Dam in southern Eqypt, seen from Shuttle Atlantis during the STS-34 mission of 18-23 October 1989. The Lake is here at capacity following the rainy season of the upper River Nile. Water flows into the lake from the south (below the frame),and is held back by the Aswan Dam seen at the top left of the Lake. The Nile continues its flow out of upper frame toward the Mediterranean Sea some 900 km away. The water course entering the lake from the right is the Wadi Allaqi. At full capacity,Lake Nasser contains around 130,000 million tonnes of water. Previous Shuttle missions have photographed the lake at different times of the year | |
