Tufa formations at Mono Lake,California,USA. Tufa is a rock formed by precipitation of calcium salts. In Mono Lake, they formed as underwater springs released calcium-rich water into the lake. The lake's water has a very high salinity and alkalinity, which caused the calcium salts to precipitate out of solution. The formations were revealed after the lake's water level dropped significantly. This was due to water being diverted from the lake to supply the nearby city of Los Angeles. The water level is now rising again after a campaign to protect the lake | |
