Geothermal limestone terrace. The white deposits are limestone, precipitated from hot water saturated with dissolved calcium carbonate. This water, seen in the foreground,is hot because it has been heated underground by geothermal activity. These are travertine deposits,a mixture of calcite and aragonite (both are forms of limestone).
