Algae on travertine. Travertine is a mineral that forms on terraces at the outflow of geothermal springs. Springs occur where water is heated under pressure far underground. The water dissolves large quantities of minerals from the surrounding rocks. As the water reaches the surface it cools and minerals are precipitated out. The abundance of minerals and the hot environment make it a suitable location for algae to thrive. Photographed in Pamukale,Turkey | |
