Mineral terrace. The white material on the terrace is the mineral travertine. These terraces form at the outflow of a geothermal spring. Springs occur where water is heated under pressure far underground, which dissolves large quantities of minerals from the surrounding rocks. As the water reaches the surface it cools and minerals are precipitated out. Photographed at the Mammoth Hot Springs,Yellowstone National Park,Wyoming,USA | |
