Hot spring. Blue-green algae or cyanobacteria blooming in a geothermal pool (hot spring) in a hydrothermal area. Hot springs contain numerous minerals and nutrients dissolved from underground rock. These chemical nutrients and the hot, anaerobic, aquatic environment allow primitive algae and bacteria to flourish. Some species of blue-green algae are able to tolerate temperatures of up to 165 Celsius. Photographed at Yellowstone National Park,Wyoming,USA | |
