Yangtze Delta satellite image. North is at top. Vegetation is green, water is blue, sediment is brown and clouds are white. The Yangtze is China's longest river, with the city of Shanghai (grey, upper centre) situated below the mouth of the delta. The swirls (far right) are areas of off- shore sediment, which indicates that the delta is still growing. The three islands in the river mouth are Chongming,Changxing and Hengsha. They have been created from the deposition of sand and silt. Photographed on 16 September 2000 by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS),on board NASA's Terra satellite | |
