Southern Falls,New Zealand, aerial photograph. This waterfall (centre) falls 580 metres from the lake above,to Milford Sound at bottom. Milford Sound is a fjord in the south of New Zealand's South Island. The fjord, and the surrounding landscape of snow-capped mountainous peaks and other fjords, was sculpted by the weight of glaciers during past Ice Ages. It is an area of rich natural beauty, with temperate rainforests covering the peaks, and seals, penguins and dolphins as part of the rich diversity of marine life. The area receives large amounts of rain, which can lead to entire mountainsides covered with temporary waterfalls | |
