Grand Canyon. View of the Grand Canyon in Arizona,USA. The canyon is formed by a series of steep slopes and cliffs formed by water erosion. The canyon was formed during the last 6 million years by the action of the Colorado river. The canyon reaches around 29 kilometres across at its widest, and descends over 1500 metres. Erosion has exposed many multi-coloured bands of rock, the deepest of which are over one billion years old. Prominent here are three snow-covered buttes (hills left by erosion),or temples. At upper left is Osiris Temple,Isis Temple is at upper right, and Buddha Temple is seen near the top right corner | |
