Grand Canyon. The Grand Canyon is often described as the world's largest gorge. It extends for 444 km along the Colorado River in Arizona, and reaches a width of 29 km and a depth of 1.6 km in places. The canyon formed over the last 2 million years as the Colorado Plateau was uplifted, and the Colorado River cut into the bedrock. The depth of the canyon allows geologists to study an unbroken sequence of sedimentary rock formation dating back to the Precambrian era 2 billion years ago | |
