Weathered limestone pinnacles. In arid regions, wind erosion can create upright columns of sedimentary rock such as limestone. This effect occurs over millions of years of surface erosion by wind, when cores of material harder than the surrounding rocks survive above the ground. Blast effects of sand carried by the wind then round off the features. Photographed in Pinnacles Desert,Western Australia,Australia | |
