Eroded sandstone. Sandstone is a sedimentary rock formed by the accumulation and compaction of small rock particles. Its surface can be eroded by water or by the scouring action of sand particles carried by the wind. Depending on the origin of particles making up the sandstone, certain layers will be more resistant to erosion than others, resulting in a stratified appearance.
