Sandstone rock formations. In arid regions, wind erosion can create towering columns out of sedimentary rock such as sandstone. This effect occurs over millions of years of surface erosion by wind, when cores of material harder than the surrounding rocks survive above the landscape. Blast effects of sand carried by the wind then round-off the feature; the layered effects result from the different erosion rates in different strata, layers of softer rock erode more quickly.
