San rock art showing cooking pots (upper right). The San people (also known as Bushmen) who painted these pictographs once inhabited all of southern Africa. They were displaced by the Bantu people into the deserts and high mountain country. European settlers, arriving in the interior from the coast of southern Africa, drove the mountain San to extinction by the start of the twentieth century. The rock painting were thought to be around 1000 years old,but more recent research has estimated them to be around 3000 years old.
