Stegosaurus, artwork. This late Jurassic dinosaur (Stegosaurus sp.) had a distinctive row of bony plates on its back. There is still doubt about their purpose and how they were arranged on the living animal. Fossil evidence suggests that they contained blood vessels. It is thought that at least part of their function was to allow the animal to regulate its body temperature by radiating and absorbing heat. Stegosaurus was a large animal, about 6 metres in length and possibly weighing over 1.5 tonnes. It had a disproportionately small brain, estimated to weigh only 70-80 grams. It was herbivorous and defended itself from predators with its spiked tail | |
