Fossil fish. A shoal of fossilised fish (Knightia alta (Leidy)) from the Eocene period (54-38 mill- ion years ago). This unusually well-preserved fos- sil is called a 'life assemblage' because it shows a group of animals that were killed suddenly and then preserved where they lay.
