Fossilised oyster. A rock containing fossils of the extinct oyster Gryphaea arcuata. This view of the fossil rock (at centre) shows several thick top shells of the oyster. These are a characteristic convex coiled shape. The second shell was small and lid-like. Oysters are classified as bivalve molluscs,they have two shells and a compressed body. The genus Gryphaea existed during the Jurassic geological period (about 130 million years ago). Found in southern Germany | |
