Trilobite. An unusually well-preserved fossil trilobite (Phacops sp.) from the Silurian period (434-408 million years ago). The trilobites are an extinct group of marine arthropods which were once extremely common throughout the world's oceans for millions of years. Most species are thought to have lived on the sea floor, where they probably scuttled around in search of food rather like modern crabs do. Their flexible backs allowed them to roll up into a tight ball when being attacked by predators. As well as having two very large eyes they had tactile antennae to help feel their way around in the dark. This individual was found in the USA and measures 5.5cm long | |
