Anatomical comparison between the jaw bones of a chimpanzee (top),Australopithecus afarensis,a hominid fossil (middle) and Homo sapiens sapiens,a contemporary human. A. afarensis is dated at 3.3 million years ago and is considered to be the hominid ancestor of the Homo sp. line of evolution, which gave rise to modern humans. This comparison shows that the jaw structure of A. afarensis was anatomically closer to the chimpanzee than to the contemporary human. A. afarensis was found at the Hadar site,Afar depression,Ethiopia,in the 1970s | |
