Neanderthal man. Model of a seated neanderthal man (Homo sapiens neanderthalensis). Neanderthals were early humans that lived in Europe and the Middle East about 120-30,000 years ago. Neanderthals' brains were slightly larger than ours, being up to 1750 millilitres in volume. They fashioned tools with which they made weapons, created carvings and constructed dwellings. They are also known to have buried their dead. The name neanderthal comes from the Neander Valley in Germany where the first skeleton of this type of human was found.
