Composite image,showing casts of hominid fossil skulls and bone fragments,drawings and memorabilia brought by palaeoanthropologist Franz Weidenreich (centre) from Peking to New York in 1941. These fossil remains were recovered at Chou K'ou Tien between 1929 and 1937 and were classified by Weidenreich as Homo erectus. They are commonly referred to as Peking Man. Weidenreich (1873-1948) worked at the Cenozoic Laboratory in Peking from 1935-1941 when the Japanese invaded China. He returned to America,taking with him casts of the collection.
