Early hominid footprints. Cast of footprints of human ancestors (probably Australopithecus afarensis) taken from Laetoli,Tanzania. The rock bed on which they were preserved is 3.7 million years old. These footprints were discovered by Mary Leakey's team in 1976. They show that human ancestors had acquired an upright, bipedal gait by this stage in their evolution. The complete 70- metre path of the hominid footprints contains prints made by two or three individuals. From the length of their gait it has been calculated that the hominids were between 120 and 140 centimetres in height | |
