Levallois stone tools. Hand holding a rock hammer to demonstrate the creation of Levallois stone tools. Levallois was a technique that was first used in the lower palaeolithic (stone age),but is most associated with the Mousterian tool- making done by Neanderthals between 300,000 and 30,000 years ago. The technique continued to be used by modern humans long after the Neanderthals died out,and was still in use in the upper Palaeolithic (up to around 10,000 years ago) and even later. The Levallois technique involved striking a stone core several times to flake off pieces around the edges of the intended flake, before finally striking the core to remove the flake | |
