Stone tool. Modern copy of a palaeolithic stone hand axe from the hominid (early human) Acheulean culture. The flakes of rock created during the manufacture of the axe from a larger stone block are also seen. This tool is thought to have been used for a range of tasks, from butchering animals to carving wood. The tools of the Acheulean culture were advanced compared to other hominid tools of the time, and were probably made by the early human species Homo erectus, and by early Homo sapiens peoples. Acheulean tools were manufactured over a period that lasted from 1.5 million to 200,000 years ago. This axe was found in the Olduvai Gorge,Tanzania,Africa | |
