Human fossil site. Tautavel environs,a region where hominid fossil skull and bone fragments of Arago man, also known as Tautavel man, were excavated in 1964 by H. de Lumley. The fossils were found in a limestone cave in the Verdouble valley near the village of Tautavel,19 kilometres northwest of Perpignan,France. The dating of the finds is uncertain although two periods are suggested: the Third and earlier Second Glaciation periods. Initially Arago man was regarded as an intermediate stage between Homo erectus and Neanderthal man,but more recently it is seen as an European example of a Homo erectus/Homo sapiens transitional form | |
