Siliceous formations. Stalactite-like formations of the mineral silica (silicon dioxide) inside a rock cavity. The elongated columns have formed by the precipitation of silica from water dripping from the roof of this cavity in a rock. This process is also how stalactites and stalagmites form from the mineral calcite (calcium carbonate). Each column is less than a centimetre long. This is a form of cryptocrystalline silica called chalcedony. Silica is more commonly known in its crystalline form of quartz | |
