| Haematite. Macrophotograph of the polished surface of haematite (iron oxide). A typical banding pattern is seen,with cracks containing calcite. Haematite varies in colour from metallic black to a dull red. The soft,red,earthy form is known as red ochre. Haematite is a common and widely- distributed mineral occurring in igneous,sedimentary and metamorphic rocks. It is the most important ore of iron and has industrial uses in paint manufacture and polishing compounds. This specimen was found at Egremont in Cumbria,England. Darkfield illumination.
