Crystals of spessartite (orange) growing on an aggregate of albite crystals. Spessartite (manganese aluminium silicate) is one of several varieties of garnet. It varies in colour from yellowish-orange to reddish-violet and is used as a gemstone. Albite (sodium aluminium silicate) is colourless or white and forms two different types of crystal; the prismatic variety seen here (known as pericline) and a lamellar (plate-like) variety (known as cleavelandite).
