Cubic cystals of halite (rock salt),or naturally occurring sodium chloride. This specimen was found in Poland. Rock salt is a precipitate in sedimentary deposits caused by the evaporation of saline waters, usually saline lakes. Rock salt deposits are often found interbedded with clay. It is often found together with anhydrite and gypsum. Rock salt is of prime importance in the animal and human diet. In the chemical industry it is used in the preparation of soda, hydrochloric acid, and sodium. It is also used in the food-preserving industry | |
