A specimen of rose quartz found in Brazil. Quartz,an oxide of the nonmetallic element silicon,is one of the commonest minerals found on the earth and appears in a variety of forms. The colour of rose quartz is thought to be caused by traces of manganese or titanium. It occurs in massive form, but well formed crystals are rare. Rose quartz looses its colour when heated and turns black when exposed to radiation. Quartz is an important mineral in industry because of its piezoelectric properties. It is also used in large quantities in the manufacture of paints, glass, abrasives, refractories and percision instruments | |
