Light micrograph of a thin section through a pyroxene, one of a group of igneous rock-forming minerals. The specific type of this example is not known. The pyroxenes are mainly silicates of magnesium, calcium & iron. The most common member is augite, which is composed of magnesium, iron, aluminium & calcium. Other members include enstatine and hypersthene, diopside and aegerine. Pyroxene means "strange to fire",a title derived from an opinion that the minerals were only accidentally caught up in the lavas that contain them. Magnification: x11 at 6x6cm size | |
