Eroded sandstone cliff at the coast. This sandstone was laid down fairly recently,in the Pleistocene epoch, which lasted from 1.81 million to 11,500 years ago. The horizontal bands in it indicate how it formed, from gradual lithification (rock forming) after deposition in a shallow sea. The sandstone contains numerous bioclasts, embedded animal remains such as mollusc shells. Photographed at Villa di Nerone,Italy | |
