Limestone sinkhole. The grass covers an eroded limestone landscape that includes a sinkhole (or doline) at lower centre. This is a hole that is eroded deep into the limestone rock, and which may connect to underground caves formed by the same erosion processes. The limestone rock has been shaped by natural chemical erosion. Carbon dioxide in the air dissolves in rainwater to form carbonic acid. This acid erodes the limestone rock as the water flows over it. Landscapes formed in this way are referred to as karst landscapes. This area is on Glattalp,an alp found in Schwyz Canton,Switzerland | |
