Banded sedimentary cliff. View of a cliff of sedimentary rocks, showing very distinct strata. The upper layers of the rocks were deposited about 10 million years ago, whilst the lowest layers are over 250 million years old. The rocks are different colours due to their composition: most of the red and yellow rocks are sandstones with differing amounts of mineral inclusions. The prominent grey layer is from the Chinle formation,a graywacke deposit from the late Triassic period of about 210 million years ago,in which dinosaur footprints have been found.
