Sandstone and shale. A sandstone and shale cliff- face showing distinct strata. Both shale and sandstone are sedimentary clastic rocks (rocks formed from fragments of broken rock eroded and then deposited at a different site). Once deposited the sediment is consolidated by compression and the deposition of minerals such as calcite, which bind the sediment particles into a solid mass. The rock is stratified as a result of breaks in sedimentation. Photographed at Whitby,North Yorkshire | |
