Early Earth. Artwork of the surface of the Earth early in its history. The Earth is thought to have formed around 4.6 billion years ago from the accretion of rocks. After this time, some 4000 million years ago,the Earth and Moon suffered a heavy barrage of meteor showers, which shaped their surfaces. This is known as the Era of Heavy Bombardment. Since then tectonic forces and the atmosphere have reshaped the Earth's surface. The moon has no atmosphere or tectonic activity and therefore still shows these early impacts craters. The Moon is seen larger here, than at present,as at this time it was closer to the Earth | |
