Computer modelling of Earth's interior. This image shows convection patterns in the mantle in a model in which the core of the Earth (white) is cool, while the mantle around it is heated internally. The colours show temperatures between 306 Kelvin (dark blue) and 419 Kelvin (red). The small white arrows indicate the direction and speed of movement of the rocks (maximum 2mm per year). The convection patterns inside the mantle are chaotic,so no major stable volcanic 'plumes' have developed. This Earth was modelled by Dr John Baumgardner using a Cray Y-MP computer.
