Volcanic rock formation. Lava outcrop in Crater Lake,Oregon,USA. This outcrop is variously called Phantom Rock,or Phantom Ship, for its resemblance to a ship and because it can be difficult to see from a distance in the bright sunlight. Crater Lake formed around 6900 years ago, following the collapse of a large volcano. Later volcanism has produced several islands and outcrops within the lake. The lake itself is around 600 metres deep, and the height of the caldera wall ranges from 300-600 metres above the level of the lake (equivalent to over 2000 metres above sea level). The lake is around 8 kilometres wide and 10 kilometres long | |
