Mount St Helens volcano. This is the south side of the Mount St Helens volcano,Washington State,USA. The entire mountainside, including a glacier (centre),is covered in ash from volcanic eruptions. The summit crater is 2 kilometres wide, and was formed during the volcanic eruption of 18 May 1980. The northern face of the volcano (the opposite side to the one seen here) collapsed and a massive pyroclastic flow erupted northwards. The volcano was reduced in height by 400 metres, and hundreds of square kilometres of forest were destroyed. 57 people died. Much of the area around the volcano has yet to fully recover. From 2004,the volcano has become active again | |
