Santorini caldera. Boulder on the rim of a depression caused by a volcanic eruption in the Santorini islands in Greece. This depression was caused when an eruption around 1600 BC emptied a shallow-level magma chamber, causing the surrounding area to collapse into the cavity. Such a feature is known as a caldera. It is believed that this eruption may have destroyed a Minoan island civilisation which was based here, leading to the myth of the lost city of Atlantis | |
