Santorini eruption. Historical artwork depicting a volcanic eruption by the island of Nea Kameni in 1866. This eruption,in the Santorini group of islands in Greece, was part of a series of volcanic events which tripled the size of Nea Kameni. 140 million cubic metres of lava were produced in the period from 1866 to 1870. It is believed that a catastrophic eruption in this area around 1600 BC may have destroyed a Minoan island civilisation which was based here, leading to the myth of the lost city of Atlantis | |
