Volcanic sulphur mining. Cast iron pipes conducting sulphur-rich gases from the inside of a volcano. Liquid sulphur condenses in a pool underneath the pipe. As it cools solid sulphur (yellow) is formed. Elemental sulphur is a component of the magma (molten rock) that issues from volcanoes as lava. Certain sites, like this one at Kawah Ijen in Java,Indonesia, are rich sources of sulphur and sulphur gases, including the toxic hydrogen sulphide. Solid sulphur is mined for use in industry, primarily in producing sulphuric acid for further industrial uses | |
