Mount St Helens volcano and dead trees. Mount St Helens erupted in 1980 with a titanic blast that ripped out the north side of the volcano, leaving the large gap seen in the crater wall. The blast devastated a 600-square-kilometre area. Most of the mature trees in the heavily forested area were flattened. The area has yet to fully recover from the blast.
