Dead trees killed by the 1980 volcanic eruption of Mount St Helens (upper centre). When Mount St Helens erupted in 1980,a titanic sideways blast ripped out the north side of the volcano and devastated a 600 square kilometre area. Most of the mature trees in the heavily forested area were flattened like matchsticks and burnt in the intense heat. Twenty years later, the area has not recovered from the blast, though new growth is seen amid the debris. Photographed in Washington State,USA,in 2000 | |
