Volcanic eruption. Night time view of a Strombolian eruption of the south-east crater of Etna,a volcano on Sicily. Strombolian activity is characterised by frequent, even constant, release of lava and gas but without violent explosions. Despite this gentle release,Etna has also produced occasional intense lava eruptions which have threatened communities in the surrounding land. Mount Etna (3323 metres) is Europe's largest active volcano with over 200 subsidiary cones. Photographed in October 1998 | |
