White Island volcano. View of the White Island volcano showing its crater lake and fumaroles. This is the most active volcano in New Zealand, lying in the Bay of Plenty. The large,horseshoe- shaped crater contains several fumaroles (vents which release gases and steam),and a hot, very acidic lake (centre),which is nearly always concealed by steam. The island used to be home to sulphur works, which used the natural mineral resources present near the volcano. An eruption and landslide in 1914 killed all the workers there, and destroyed the works. White Island is now uninhabited | |
